Architects of the Metaverse
The Metaverse is a clean slate for an architect, a chance to show off their skills with the reigns taken off, a digital paradise where creative expression is not only appreciated but actively sought after. The Metaverse is an architectural utopia, in the real world, funding, planning permission, environment, and construction technology constrain architects. However, in the Metaverse, no such limitations exist.
The Metaverse Architect is free to provide conceptual buildings that could not otherwise be created. Construction on the Metaverse is in its infancy and as the technology evolves so too will architecture challenge our experience of extended reality. Metaverse architecture may become the next NFT art form.
From pyramids to cathedrals the complexities of architects have confounded builders for centuries. Barcelona’s La Sagrada Familia will have taken 144 years to build when construction completes in 2026, on the Metaverse the Cathedral would have taken months.
Maybe it’s because of the free reign the Metaverse offers that architects are embracing the technology and moving from traditional architecture into 3D virtual worlds. Although it’s not just architects that are building the Metaverse. Metaverse construction has attracted artists,3D modellers, game designers, programmers, and virtual world enthusiasts keen to take their world-building hobbies into full-time careers. The Metaverse will most likely be built on social platforms and by experts in the field in the same way the internet evolved. A mixture of awe-inspiring construction with individual visions and home spaces.

With the “metaverse” so far trending as the buzzword for 2023 interest in the technology has intensified. The term may well become the zeitgeist of the decade as investment into the Metaverse continues at an exponential rate. JP Morgan reported in the last year land prices have more than doubled on decentralised Metaverse platforms.
Many traditional architects are transferring their skills to the Metaverse and a particular skill set is required. 3D modelling knowledge is a must but it will also do you in good stead to learn to program for the Metaverse platform you wish to publish on. Ability and understanding of Builder Software, Unity or Unreal Engine is a prerequisite and of course, a creative mind. As Metaverse landowners seek to capitalise on their investment through the virtual development of Metaverse properties, architects will be in high demand.
